QDo I need a visa to study in Canada?A
If you plan to study for 6 months or longer, you will need to apply for a study permit before coming to Canada. If you plan to study less than 6 months, you can study on a visitor’s visa or an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), depending on your country of citizenship. Updated information is available through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
QHow do I apply for a visa?A
Please contact the nearest Canadian Visa Office or Canada Visa Application Centre. Visa Offices and Visa Application Centres will have specific information and requirements that may need to be submitted with your application. You can use the Letter of Acceptance from International House Whistler as supporting documentation for your application. A list of Canada Visa Application Centres is available.

QWhat documents do I need to have ready when I arrive in Canada?A
Please be prepared show these documents when you arrive in Canada:
・A valid passport
・Study Permit or Temporary Resident Visa (if applicable)
・Your Letter of Acceptance
・A return airline ticket
・Proof of sufficient funds to live in Canada
・Proof of accommodation
(a confirmation letter from International House Whistler for Homestay or Student House if you have this)
QHow old do you have to be to go to pubs and night clubs in Whistler?A
The minimum age for drinking and smoking in Whistler is 19. ID is strictly checked in Whistler clubs.
QWhen should I book my course?A
You should book your course as far in advance as possible. If you need to apply for a visa before coming to Canada, you can check processing wait times.
International House Whistler accepts last minute bookings, but we do require advance confirmation to use our accommodation services. Please inquire first to check availability.
QWhen do programs start?A
International House Whistler accepts students to start every Monday (or first day of week in case of holiday). Please check our website for start dates for Cambridge Exam Preparation courses.
QHow much does a program cost?A
All International House Whistler programs are priced on a weekly basis.The price depends on how many hours per week you study, how long your study period is and whether you study during our winter or summer season. You can view our prices on our registration form or you can get a quote with our course pricer page.
QHow much do books and materials cost?A
International House Whistler does not charge for materials. Class sets of textbooks are provided for students to use at school.
QHow can I find out my English level?A
On your first day at International House Whistler, we administer an English placement exam to determine your level. If you would like to have an idea before coming to Whistler you can take our online placement level test here.
About Location and Facilities
QWhere is the school located?A
International House Whistler is located in the heart of Whistler Village just one minute from the gondolas which run up to Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.
QWhat facilities are near the school?A
There is a movie theatre in our building and several art galleries. There are also many banks and shops within easy walking distance.
QCan I use my laptop or tablet in the school?A
Yes, we have full Wi-fi access available to our students to use throughout the school.
Q Is there somewhere near the school where I can keep my snowboard / skiis / mountain bike?A
Yes, we have a great storage facility in the basement of our building. We permit our students to keep their gear here (for free) to allow for convenient and easy access to the mountain.
QHow is the weather in Whistler?A
Whistler has cold, wet winters and dry, warm summers. Of course the temperature in the village will be a few degrees warmer than up on the mountains. The average high in the village in July is 23.6 °C and in January about 1°C.
QWhen can I ski or snowboard in Whistler?A
Ski season usually opens the third week of November and stays open on both Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains until the end of April. Parts of Blackcomb Mountain will stay open until mid-May for spring skiing and there is also summer glacier skiing on Blackcomb Mountain in June and July.
QWhen is the downhill mountain bike park open?A
The mountain bike park generally opens in mid-May, depending on the snow melt from the winter, and stays open through September.
About Faculty & Staff
QWhat qualifications and experience do teachers have?A
International House Whister teachers all have at least a bachelor’s degree and an internationally recognized TESOL certificate like the Cambridge CELTA. We have teachers from many different backgrounds with great teaching and life experience that they are eager to share with their students.
QDo you have staff who speak other languages?A
Because Whistler is a smaller school, we only have a few staff members. However, our partner school , International House Vancouver can assist you in over 12 languages. Please feel free to ask if you would like to correspond in your own language. We will do our best to ensure we have someone available who can speak to you directly or through email.
QHow are your faculty and staff reviewed?A
As an affiliate of the International House World Organization and a member of Languages Canada, our teachers and staff are regularly reviewed, and qualifications are checked. Both of these organizations are leaders in quality assurance.
QWhat kinds of accommodation do you offer?A
International House Whistler works with quality homestay providers as well as maintaining a student house.
QWhen do I book accommodation with International House Whistler?A
Whistler is a small town and there is limited capacity for both homestay and student house options. We recommend checking with us as soon as possible to try and confirm availability. Student house beds are available on a first-come first-served basis, so space is limited. Since homestay can be very busy, espcecially during the peak months, please confirm your booking as soon as possible.
QAre meals included with the accommodation fee?A
For homestay we have options without meals included, or with breakfast and dinner only included. Students can also pay a full-board supplement to have their lunch inluded. If you require any extra meals or special meal requests, these are not included in the fee. The student house does not include any meals or food.
QIs Wi-Fi included with accommodation?A
Yes, both our homestay families and our student houses provide access to in-home Wi-Fi.
QCan I easily change my accommodation?A
Using our accommodation service is similar to renting your own place. We require notice in order to make any changes. If there is a serious problem, we will of course do everything to help you move. But, generally, if you want to change you must provide 4 weeks' notice to our homestay coordinator.
QCan I use the laundry facilities?A
Yes, you can use the laundry facilities. Host families will give you times when you can do laundry. The student house allows laundry except for early in the morning and late at night. Please respect these times.
